International Orchestra Institute Attergau

Vienna Philharmonic and students play together

The International Orchestral Institute for Viennese Sound Style was founded in 1994 in Attergau. The aim of the institute is to convey to students from Austrian and foreign universities and academies the sound style and the music tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic as well as making them familiar with specific Viennese instruments. Besides the year-round academic studies carried out jointly with the University of Music, a three-week working phase is held annually with Austrian and foreign students, during which eminent members of the orchestra and conductors teach. At the end of the working period the studied works are performed in the Attergau Cultural Summer series of concerts. Sir Neville Marriner, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Christoph von Dohnanyí and others have taught here.

In September and October 1999 major articles about the institute appeared in the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune. As a result the Carnegie Hall in New York took on the patronage of the auditions for American students. For its support of the International Orchestral Institute in Attergau, Nestlé Austria was awarded the Austrian sponsorship prize MAECENAS in 1999 in the main category "Concept" by the Association for Culture and Business. The link between the International Orchestral Institute and the Salzburg Festival is also due to Nestlé Austria.

On 27 August 2001 Valery Gergiev will conduct the Attersee Institute Orchestra, which for the first time will include not only students but also some of the most eminent members of the Vienna Philharmonic, for instance Rainer Küchl, Franz Bartolomey, Wolfgang Schulz, Martin Gabriel and Michael Werba. As a special sign of the Vienna Philharmonic's close association with the International Orchestral Institute Attergau, the chairman of the orchestra, Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, has also agreed to participate.
