At the 2001 Festival the Mozarteum Orchestra plays Strauß,
Honegger and, naturally, Mozart Die Fledermaus and Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher Salzburg has two orchestras: the Camerata Salzburg, founded by Bernhard Paumgartner as the Camerata academica, given its individual stamp by Sándor Végh and conducted today by Sir Roger Norrington; and the no less renowned and accomplished Mozarteum Orchestra, of which Hans Graf was chief conductor from 1984 to 1994 and whose successor in that role since 1995 has been Hubert Soudant. As well as "its" Mozart Matinees, the Mozarteum Orchestra will be playing Arthur Honegger's oratorio, Jeanne d'Arc au bucher, at the 2001 Salzburg Festival (28 July) and Johann Strauß' Die Fledermaus (as from 17 August) in the Felsenreitschule. Karl Harb describes the history and development of the "Salzburg Orchestra" that was founded 160 years ago. Two special events in its recent history have accounted for the Mozarteum
Orchestra, Salzburg, achieving international acclaim. The Salzburg Festival
commissioned the orchestra for two major opera productions in the Residenzhof
- Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)
under Marc Minkowski (1997/98), and Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride
under Ivor Bolton (2000). The orchestra, which in recent years has engaged
many younger musicians, took advantage of these opportunities to give
masterly and stirring performances. Mozart and "Original Sound": the orchestra is versatile in both of these genres This versatility is due to the work of Hubert Soudant from Holland, chief
conductor since 1995. By perseveringly working on the historic orchestra's
sound quality, he has made the ensemble equally competent in the performance
of the great classical-romantic symphony repertoire and in the performance
of Mozart in a new and inventive way. Through continued collaboration
with musicians from the so-called "original sound" scene (Frans
Brüggen, Ton Koopman, Trevor Pinnock, Marc Minkowski, Ivor Bolton),
the tone of the orchestra has achieved a new freshness and verve, something
that has not escaped the attention of Festival audiences at the Mozart
matinees - the special domain of the Mozarteum Orchestra in summer.
And the orchestra has a very full programme again in summer 2001. After
providing the traditional musical ambience to the formal opening of the
Festival on July 22, Hubert Soudant will conduct Arthur Honegger's Jeanne
d'Arc au bucher in the Felsenreitschule. There will be five Mozart
matinees, conducted by Hubert Soudant, Ivor Bolton, Philippe Jordan, Joseph
Swensen and Erwin Ortner respectively. Bolton is also the conductor at
the traditional performance of Mozart's C minor Mass in St. Peter's Abbey.
And, finally, as from August 17 the orchestra will again be working with
Marc Minkowski when Hans Neuenfels' new production of Die Fledermaus will
be given in the Felsenreitschule. Anybody who knows Minkowski's Offenbach
can start looking forward even now to an exciting musical experience. see: The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg 28 July 2001, at 8 p.m. plays Arthur Honegger's Jeanne d'Arc au bucher Tickets still available at ATS 1,900 and 2,200 Mozart Matinees on 28, 29 July; 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 August 2001, at 11 a.m. Tickets available for 4 August at ATS 1,300 W.
