DA PONTE IN SANTA FE
Claus Peymann stages a play commissioned by the Salzburg Festival

“Everything is true in this play – only the location Santa Fé is invented”, says Peter Turrini about his first work commissioned by the Salzburg Festival.

Da Ponte, Mozart’s brilliant librettist, is living in poverty towards the end of his life and has to make a living selling brandy in the foyer of a saloon in Santa Fé that has been turned into an opera house. Don Giovanni is being performed. At the end of his life Da Ponte would like to be recognised by the audience but he does not even manage to have his name printed on the poster.

The artist’s struggle for recognition. The artist’s struggle with his opponents. The artist’s struggle to make a living.

Da Ponte is at the end of all hope but does not want to give up. A young girl is on the verge of the career she has been hoping for. An unequal couple but they are not so different from one another.

Peter Turrini’s commissioned work Da Ponte in Santa Fé will be given its world premiere in the staging by Claus Peymann at the Salzburg Festival.
