YOUNG DIRECTORS PROJECT What are the subjects, texts, pictures that can inspire a young generation of stage directors of various international identities, who come from different theatrical backgrounds and who want to present themselves and their work in the competition Young Directors Project at the Salzburg Festival? This programme brings together four theatre artists in a multi-lingual performance presentation. Some of the questions that will be debated with artists in the accompanying discussions will revolve around whether common ground can be found even where there are differing production conditions, whether it is still possible to speak of a separation between institutionalised theatre and free ensembles or whether this is indeed a phenomenon of the German theatre world. At the end of the project one of the young stage directors will be awarded the newly founded theatre prize Montblanc Salzburg Award for the first time at the Salzburg Festival. Falk Richter Falk Richter is to direct The Shape of Things, a fateful affair between an awkwardly shy young man, who becomes a confident lover, and an enthusiastic art student who brings about the metamorphosis in the man. Neil LaBute, author and film-maker in New York, uses everyday language, intensifies current dialogues in disturbing moments of drama. Oskaras Korsunovas Oskaras Korsunovas, born in 1971, highly acclaimed star of the young generation at the Lithuanian National Theatre, has already achieved success in Europe. In 1998 he founded his own company and brought together young actors with a strong physical and energetic presence. His repertoire encompasses the works of several young German dramatists such as Marius von Mayenburg and Falk Richter. Now for the first time Korsunovas is attempting the interpretation of Greek tragedy with King Oedipus by Sophocles, the story of eternal alienation.
Frédéric Fisbach During a stay in Japan lasting several months Frédéric
Fisbach discovered the Bunraku Marionette Theatre. He was fascinated by
the separation of text and scene, the sophistication of a scene in perfect
silence followed by an acoustically brilliant moment of the narrator who
takes on the entire text for himself. In Fisbachs Genet project
Les Paravents three actors will interact with marionettes led by Japanese
