FASCINATING MUSICAL PERSONALITY

Marcello Viotti conducts Rossini’s
"La Donna del Lago"

Milestones in interpretation

Madama Butterfly in New York, Nabucco at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Un Ballo in Maschera in Bregenz, Beatrice di Tenda in Milan – the list of operas conducted by Marcello Viotti reveals his extraordinarily broad repertoire. Not only that – as a concert conductor he works with the most re- nowned orchestras in the world and his recordings can be regarded as milestones of interpretation. Marcello Viotti is simply one of the most fascinating and outstanding musical personalities of our time.

International career

Viotti studied piano, singing and cello in Lausanne and made his debut as a conductor directing a wind ensemble that he founded. In 1982 he won first prize at the Gina Marinuzzi Competition in Italy, an award that brought him conducting engagements in Italy’s major cities and marked the launch of a breathtaking international career.

Cult status with sacred music

And what have been some of the stages in Marcello Viotti’s career? He was kapellmeister at the Turin Opera, artistic director of the Lucerne City Theatre, conductor of the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig. In 1998 he was appointed principal conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra and aroused great interest with his choice of programmes. In the 1999/2000 season he achieved cult status with the cycle of sacred 20th century music entitled Paradisi Gloria. His reading of La Donna del Lago promises to be a highlight of the operas performed at this year’s Festival.
