DISCOVERING NEW GROUND Igor Bauersima opens the Young Directors Project
Besides Oskaras Korsunovas from Lithuania and Frédéric Fisbach from France, Igor Bauersima completes the circle of young European stage-directors participating in the Young Directors Project of the Salzburg Festival. The competition opens on 2 August with Neil LaBute’s play The Shape of Things and Bauersima is responsible for the staging, sets and costumes. The director originally intended for the production, Falk Richter, is at present writing a new play. Igor Bauersima was born in Prague and grew up in Switzerland. In his stage works he aims to achieve a synthesis of the various arts and in particular combines the means of theatre and film. Bauersima has a broad range of interests: he has a degree in architecture, from 1989 he worked as a scriptwriter and wrote works for the stage as well as directing them, and as a musician he has also issued several CDs. In 1993 Igor Bauersima founded the OFF OFF-stage in Zurich, a highly acclaimed ensemble with which he has since realised eight plays of his own as well as works by other contemporary dramatists. He has had guest engagements as director of productions at theatres in Düsseldorf and Hannover. Igor Bauersima says that his work has been influenced not least by the aesthetic approach of Jean-Luc Godard, “I do not want to re-invent the theatre but always take steps in new directions and gradually discover new ground.” The staging of The Shape of Things is a co-production with the Burgtheater in Vienna from whose ensemble all the actors have been recruited: Johanna Wakalek, who last appeared at the Salzburg Festival as Ophelia, plays Evelyn; Dorothee Hartinger is Jenny, Daniel Jesch takes the role of Adam and Rafael von Bargen plays Phillip.
