WELCOME GUEST ORCHESTRAS Established orchestras and youth orchestras play at the Salzburg Festival
During Mortier’s term as artistic-director of the Salzburg Festival the guest orchestras that were invited to perform caused temporary annoyance. The many travelling ensembles sometimes even played for the operas, consequently the “heart of the Festival” – the Vienna Philharmonic – disap- peared into the background and were hardly noticeable. The resultant protest was effective: in the printed programme of the Salzburg Festival the Vienna Philharmonic were given their own prestigious section and the guest orchestras also had their separate “play area”. In the meantime the storm has settled and everyone is happy again. Claudio Abbado and Mariss Jansons This summer as the Berlin Philharmonic are taking a rest between the Abbado and Rattle “epochs”, Claudio Abbado is appearing with his “favourite” child, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. There is another concert also devoted to young musicians who make up the orchestra of the International Orchestra Institute Attergau and following last year’s great success under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the orchestra will this year be conducted by Mariss Jansons. Bernard Haitink conducts the Dresden Staatskapelle in a programme of works by Richard Strauss and expectations are high as to the interpretation of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony by Riccardo Chailly with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. The German Symphony Orchestra Berlin conducted by Kent Nagano, the Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera New York conducted by James Levine (with Alfred Brendel as soloist), the Marinsky Kirov Orchestra (conducted by Valery Gergiev) and the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna under Dennis Russell Davies complete the list of guest orchestras appearing at this year’s Salzburg Festival.
