FRIENDS ARE THERE TO HELP
“Your donation will make an essential contribution to ensuring
that opera can again be performed in the Semperoper this year. With the
funds raised by donations we are helping the artistic management to restore
damaged instruments, stage sets, costumes, shoes, scenery”.
This is the opening line of the letter written to the Friends of the Salzburg
Festival by the Foundation to promote the Semperoper in Dresden. In view
of the suffering and losses endured by many people in Austria and Germany
as a result of the floods last August, we regarded it as a matter of course
that we should want to help elsewhere too. From the proceeds of the two
gala dinners the Friends donated € 10,000 to the Austrian Broadcasting
Corporation’s fund for flood victims and
€ 6,000 to the restoration of the Semperoper, this was after the
Staatskapelle Dresden had given a benefit concert for the victims of the
floods in Austria.

Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler has succeeded in finding a further
major donor for the Salzburg Festival. Mr. Donald Kahn is contributing
a very generous donation for the reconstruction of the Kleines Festspielhaus
and its adaptation as a “House for Mozart”.
I should like to take this opportunity here to express my very special
thanks to you all, our patrons, members and those who contribute towards
the printing costs of our publications. Your magnificent support makes
the Friends Association the greatest sponsor of the Salzburg Festival.
For the 2003 season the Festival will receive from us over € 2 million
as a subsidy to the production programme and for projects such as the
festivities for the opening of the Festival.
Thank you very much indeed!
The programme for the Salzburg Festival 2003 is now available and so we
can look forward together to the next Festival summer!
