Cecilia Bartoli – unique in the world of music

Arousing audience emotions
with Salieri

This phenomenal voice takes us to another world – at one moment she amazes her audiences with the brilliance and clarity of her coloratura, the next she leaves them breathless with an incredibly delicate pianissimo. For Cecilia Bartoli Salzburg is also unique: “The Salzburg Festival is of infinite importance because of its historical dimension and its influence as a major cultural event besides being a place where visions can be realised. Here an international public can encounter music, theatre and art in general in a lively and ingenious way.” What is so special about Salzburg for her personally? “For me, coming to Salzburg is a way of extending my world both as an artist and as an observer.”

In a unique symbiosis Cecilia Bartoli embodies an aesthetic spirit, sensuality and charisma. Her recordings of Vivaldi and Gluck brought her several important music prizes such as the Grammy Award and headed the European charts for classical music; she is now devoting herself to the œuvre of the Viennese court conductor Antonio Salieri. Mozart’s alleged rival composed no less than forty operas which were successfully performed, including L’Europa riconosciuta in 1778 for the opening of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Beethoven, Schubert and the young Liszt were all pupils of Salieri who taught them free of charge. Cecilia is convinced that “Salieri’s music can penetrate our innermost soul. From the very beginning I was fascinated by his music and way of composing. He knows how to arouse the emotions of the characters and make us feel with them. His ability to mould text and music together is something only found again in the work of other great composers.”

Cecilia Bartoli is indeed the most high-ranking mentor that Salieri could possibly have wished for.
